Visual Voicemail is one of those iPhone features that you don't realize how much you rely on until it suddenly stops working. Instead of a neat, organized list of playable messages, you are suddenly greeted with a blank screen, a dial prompt, or the dreaded pop-up: "Visual Voicemail is currently unavailable. Error 1035."
Error 1035 is entirely related to your cellular network and your voicemail inbox configuration. It essentially means that your iPhone is trying to communicate with your carrier's voicemail server to fetch your messages or update your greeting, but the server is rejecting the request because the voicemail box is either uninitialized, locked, or out of sync.
Fortunately, you don't necessarily need to call your carrier and wait on hold for an hour to fix this. In this guide, we will walk you through the most effective methods to troubleshoot and resolve Visual Voicemail Error 1035 directly from your iPhone.
What Causes Voicemail Error 1035?
Because Visual Voicemail relies heavily on your cellular carrier (like AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc.) rather than Apple's iCloud servers, the root cause of the error is almost always a network miscommunication. The most common triggers include:
- Network Settings Reset: If you recently reset your iPhone's network settings or updated your carrier settings, the phone may have lost the specific configuration required to connect to the voicemail server.
- Uninitialized Voicemail: If you recently switched carriers or got a new phone, your voicemail box might not be fully set up on the carrier's end, preventing Visual Voicemail from functioning.
- Voicemail Password Glitch: For security reasons, your carrier requires a password to access voicemail. If the password cached on your iPhone becomes corrupted or falls out of sync with the carrier's servers, you will get Error 1035.
- Cellular Data Issues: Visual Voicemail requires an active cellular data connection (Wi-Fi alone is not enough). If your cellular data is toggled off or you have poor signal, the feature will fail.
Step 1: Check Your Cellular Connection
Visual Voicemail files are downloaded to your iPhone via your carrier's cellular data network. If you are entirely reliant on Wi-Fi (for example, if your phone is in Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi turned back on), Visual Voicemail cannot connect to the carrier servers, which can trigger Error 1035.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap on Cellular (or Mobile Data).
- Ensure that the toggle for Cellular Data is turned On.
- Look at the top right corner of your screen (or swipe down to open Control Center). Ensure you have a stable LTE, 4G, or 5G connection.
- Turn off Wi-Fi temporarily, open the Phone app, and tap the Voicemail tab to see if it forces a refresh over the cellular network.
Step 2: Reset Your Voicemail Password
The vast majority of Error 1035 instances are resolved by simply forcing your iPhone to re-authenticate with the carrier's voicemail server. You can do this by changing or resetting your voicemail password directly in the iPhone settings.
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on Phone.
- Look for an option labeled Change Voicemail Password. (If you don't see this option, your carrier doesn't support changing it via settings, and you will need to call them).
- Enter a new 4 to 7 digit numeric password and tap Done.
- Re-enter the new password to confirm it and tap Done again.
Once the password is changed, close the Phone app completely, reopen it, and tap the Voicemail tab. It should now successfully authenticate and load your Visual Voicemail.
Step 3: Set Up Your Voicemail Manually
If changing the password in settings didn't work, your voicemail box might not be fully initialized on the carrier's side. You can manually kickstart the setup process by dialing into the old-school voice prompt system.
- Open the Phone app and tap the Keypad tab.
- Press and hold the number 1 key on the dial pad. This will automatically dial your carrier's voicemail system.
- Listen to the automated prompts. If it asks you to set up your mailbox, create a password, or record a greeting, follow all the instructions until the setup is 100% complete.
- Hang up the call.
- Restart your iPhone.
After your phone boots back up, open the Phone app and check the Voicemail tab. The manual setup should have cleared the server-side blockage causing Error 1035.
Step 4: Toggle Airplane Mode and Reset Network Settings
If the error persists, there may be a deeper routing issue with your iPhone's cellular connection. The first step is a soft network reset via Airplane Mode.
- Swipe down from the top right corner of your screen to open Control Center.
- Tap the Airplane Mode icon (it will turn orange). This disconnects all cellular and Wi-Fi radios.
- Wait at least 30 seconds, then tap the icon again to turn Airplane Mode off. Allow your phone to reconnect to the cellular network and test the Voicemail tab.
If Airplane Mode didn't fix it, you will need to perform a full Network Settings reset. This deletes all saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth connections, but it forces your iPhone to download fresh routing configurations from your carrier.
- Open Settings > General.
- Scroll to the very bottom and tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset.
- Select Reset Network Settings.
- Enter your passcode and confirm the reset. Your iPhone will restart.
Step 5: Check for Carrier Settings Updates
Carriers frequently release small configuration updates that dictate how your iPhone connects to their network. If you are running an outdated carrier file, Visual Voicemail might break.
- Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Leave the screen open for about 15 seconds. If a carrier update is available, a pop-up will appear prompting you to install it. Tap Update.
When to Contact Your Carrier
If you have followed every step in this guide—ensuring cellular data is on, changing the password, setting up the mailbox manually, and resetting network settings—and you are still seeing Error 1035, the problem is entirely out of your hands. The issue lies deep within your cellular provider's servers.
You will need to contact your carrier's customer support (e.g., AT&T, Verizon) and tell them specifically: "My Visual Voicemail is broken, and I am receiving Error 1035. I need you to completely reset my voicemail box on your end."
Once the carrier technician resets the mailbox on their servers, you can set it up fresh, and Visual Voicemail will return to normal operation.
