Will this method sync contacts on an ongoing basis?

The vCard and AirDrop methods are one-time transfers. The Finder sync method will sync again each time you connect with a cable and click Sync, but it is not automatic. For automatic ongoing sync without iCloud, no fully automated non-iCloud solution exists within the standard Apple toolset.

Can I export all iPhone contacts at once as a single vCard file?

The Contacts app on Mac (not iPhone) allows exporting all contacts as a single vCard archive. If you have some contacts on the Mac already, that is the most efficient export route. On iPhone, bulk export is not directly available within the Contacts app without a third-party tool.

Will the transfer include contact photos?

vCard exports include photos embedded in the contact record if the contact has a photo. AirDrop and Finder sync also preserve photos. However, very high-resolution photos may be compressed during sync.

I got an error during Finder sync. What should I check?

Ensure you tapped Trust on the iPhone when prompted, that both devices are updated, and that you are not also syncing contacts via iCloud (syncing the same data through two paths can cause conflicts). Disabling iCloud Contacts on one device while using Finder sync avoids this.

Transfer Contacts iPhone to Mac Without iCloud

Symptom

You want to copy or sync contacts between an iPhone and a Mac without enabling iCloud Contacts.

Contacts can be transferred between iPhone and Mac without iCloud using vCard export, AirDrop, or a USB sync through Finder.
Each method has trade-offs around ease, completeness and whether it syncs ongoing changes.
Exporting a vCard backup before any transfer is a sensible precaution.

When you might prefer not to use iCloud

iCloud Contacts sync is usually the simplest approach for Apple devices, but there are legitimate reasons to transfer contacts without it: managing multiple Apple IDs, privacy preferences, corporate device restrictions, or simply wanting a one-time copy rather than ongoing sync.

Back up contacts first

Export before you transfer

Before transferring, export your existing contacts as a backup. In the Contacts app on your Mac, choose File > Export > Contacts Archive (or Export vCard) to create a backup file. On iPhone, exporting via a contact-sharing method also creates a shareable record.

Method 1: Export a vCard from iPhone

vCard (.vcf) is the standard format for contact data and is supported by the Contacts app on Mac.

Open Contacts on iPhone
Find the contact or contacts you want to transfer.
Share the contact
Tap a contact, scroll to the bottom, and tap Share Contact. Choose a method to send the .vcf file to yourself — Mail or AirDrop are convenient.
Open the .vcf file on Mac
Double-click the received .vcf file on your Mac. The Contacts app will open and offer to import the contact.

For large numbers of contacts, this method is slow one-by-one. The Finder sync method (below) handles bulk transfers more efficiently.

Method 2: AirDrop a contact

Ensure AirDrop is on on both devices
On iPhone, access AirDrop via the Control Centre. On Mac, open Finder and check the AirDrop sidebar item, or enable it via Control Centre.
Share the contact via AirDrop
In iPhone Contacts, open the contact, scroll to Share Contact, choose AirDrop, and select your Mac.
Accept on Mac
A dialog will appear on your Mac asking whether to import the contact. Click Accept.

Method 3: Sync via Finder (USB)

A wired Finder sync can transfer all contacts at once and works without iCloud or an internet connection.

Connect iPhone to Mac with a cable
Use a Lightning-to-USB or USB-C cable depending on your iPhone model.
Open Finder and select your iPhone
Your iPhone appears in the Finder sidebar under Locations. Click it.
Go to the Info tab
In the iPhone pane, click the Info tab.
Enable Sync Contacts
Check 'Sync Contacts onto [device name]'. Choose whether to sync all contacts or selected groups.
Click Apply or Sync
Finder will sync contacts between the iPhone and the Contacts app on your Mac.

Review sync direction carefully

A Finder sync merges contacts between the Mac and iPhone. If either side has outdated data, verify the result after syncing. The sync can add contacts from Mac to iPhone as well as iPhone to Mac.
